Deosan ADU

SHARPCONCEPTS’ ability to align their advanced industrial design capabilities with commercial practicalities has enabled Waharoabased company, Deosan New Zealand Ltd, to launch an innovative new Acid Dispensing Unit (ADU).

Specifically designed to deliver time and cost saving benefits to farmers by eliminating the risk of spills, the new Deosan ADU features a semi automated shut off system and can be adopted by all manually operated milking sheds without making any major adjustments to the plant.

The design process started with a careful evaluation by Sharp Concepts of the product’s intended use, marketing considerations and projected production volumes. Tooling was subsequently designed to achieve maximum economies of scale for projected low volume manufacture, and materials were selected based on their chemical compatibility and ease of manufacture.

Kip Bodle says, “Sharp Concepts were excellent to work with. They demonstrated a keen interest in the actual commercial practicalities of selling the product right from the start, and tailored their whole design process to suit our marketing and production objectives. Their Computer Aided Design (CAD) capability was also very beneficial. It made it very easy for nontechnical people to visualise progress, and enabled us to obtain valuable feedback from potential end users.”

Sharp Concepts close association with their Product Development Centre partner, ES Plastics, also helped control costs by providing an almost seamless interface between product design and manufacture.

Sharp Concepts managing director, Jeff Sharp says, “Being able to combine our product design and tooling expertise with the plastic moulding and manufacturing capabilities of ES Plastics is a huge advantage for our clients.”

Jeff believes it was that indepth understanding of the entire manufacturing process that enabled Sharp Concepts to approach the tooling design in a totally different way to keep costs economical.

He says, “This example clearly shows that full industrial design and tooling can be commercially viable for products with projected small production runs. You don’t have to be selling tens of thousands of units a year to justify professional product development. You just have to be smart and have a very clear understanding of your production objectives right from the start.”
