Industrial design is the application of applied sciences and applied art, used to improve the usability, ergonomics and aesthetics of a product for better production and marketability. An industrial designer must execute design solutions to solve problems in usability, marketing, form, sales and the brand development of a product.
Though the process of industrial design can be considered a creative process, a lot of analysis does take place. Commonly used processes include product research, prototyping, research, sketching and testing. Many industrial designers use CAD (computer aided design) programs and 3D software to move from concept to production.
Notable industrial designers include Raymond Loewy, who designed the Shell and BP logos, the PRR S1 steam locomotive, the Studebaker Avanti and many other products. A notable modern designer would be the Senior Vice President of Design at Apple, Jonathan Ive, who is responsible for the designs of the iPod and the iPhone.
